I was looking around my pantry the other day, trying to think of what to make for snacks for the next few days, and spied a bag of maple-flavoured marshmallows. Plus, I’d just read about using brown butter to add flavour to crispy rice treats, so I thought why not combine the two? And voila, Maple & Brown Butter Crispy Rice Treats were born! As easy as the original childhood version, but just a little fancied up so that adults can enjoy them too!
Making brown butter takes maybe two minutes, and adds heaps of flavour to anything from gnocchi to baked goods. Basically, you’re heating the butter until the milk solids turn brown and sink to the bottom of the pan. The resultant butter tastes vaguely nutty and caramelly and really elevates almost any dish. Even basic crispy rice treats!
